Description
I photographed this big beautiful bird while hiking a trail in the wetlands of mid-coastal Florida. He was quite elusive and deep in the brush. I managed to get four shots before he heard me in the brush and took to the air again.
This is an Anhinga. According to Wikipedia the word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird. They primarily eat fish, but will also eat aquatic insects, crayfish, leeches, shrimp, tadpoles, frog eggs, and even young alligators and water snakes.
